Qualcomm May Have One More Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Surprise: New Chip Could Bring Flagship Power to Cheaper Phones

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 family may not be finished just yet.

Just when the mobile chip industry is looking ahead to Qualcomm’s next-generation flagship processors, a new leak suggests that Qualcomm could be preparing another version of its current high-end mobile platform. If the information turns out to be accurate, the new chipset could bring premium-level performance to more affordable flagship smartphones.

The claim comes from well-known Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station, who reportedly shared details about a previously unknown Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 variant on Weibo. According to the leak, the processor carries the model number SM8850-1-AB and could become the fourth known version of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 family.

What’s particularly interesting is where this chip could end up.

A Flagship Chip for More Affordable Phones?

According to the leaked information, the upcoming Snapdragon variant could be designed for smartphones priced below CNY 4,000, which is roughly Rs. 57,000. That could put near-flagship processing power into devices that are more accessible than the most expensive premium smartphones.

The new platform is also reportedly expected to offer benchmark performance close to the standard eight-core Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. That would be significant for buyers who want flagship-class performance without paying flagship-level prices.

The existing standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5-powered OnePlus 15, for instance, reportedly achieved Geekbench scores of 3,622 in single-core and 10,712 in multi-core testing in Gadgets 360’s tests.

Qualcomm Could Have Four Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Variants

At present, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 family is understood to include three known variants.

The first is the SM8850-5-AC, a seven-core version reportedly used in smartphones such as the Oppo Find N6.

Then there is the standard SM8850-AC, which features an eight-core CPU and powers premium devices including the OnePlus 15 and iQOO 15.

The third is a more highly clocked version associated with Samsung’s latest Galaxy devices. This variant is reportedly used in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip 8.

The alleged SM8850-1-AB could therefore become the fourth member of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 lineup.

The tipster’s claim suggests that the new processor could retain much of the feature set found on the existing flagship platform, while offering performance that remains close to the regular eight-core version.

For smartphone buyers, that could be the most interesting part of the story.

Why This Could Matter for the Smartphone Market

Chipmakers have increasingly been looking for ways to bring high-end performance to a wider range of price points. A new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 variant could allow manufacturers to launch powerful phones at lower prices without necessarily moving to a completely different generation of silicon.

The standard SM8850-AC variant is reportedly manufactured using TSMC’s 3nm N3P process and features Qualcomm’s third-generation custom Oryon CPU architecture.

The eight-core processor can reach a peak clock speed of up to 4.65GHz. Qualcomm has also claimed improvements of up to 23 percent in overall performance and up to 20 percent in power efficiency compared with the previous Snapdragon 8 Elite platform.

That combination of performance and efficiency is exactly why a lower-cost version of the chip could attract considerable attention.

If Qualcomm manages to preserve much of the flagship experience while allowing smartphone makers to reduce the final retail price, consumers could soon see more affordable phones competing with premium devices on raw performance.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Is Already Reportedly in Development

There is another twist to the story.

While Qualcomm may still be expanding the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 family, reports and leaks have already pointed toward the company’s next generation of flagship mobile processors.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro are both reportedly in development, with the Pro model expected to sit at the top of Qualcomm’s future smartphone chipset range.

The next-generation chips are also rumoured to use TSMC’s 2nm N2P manufacturing process. The Pro model could reportedly support newer technologies such as LPDDR6 RAM and UFS 5.0 storage, while the standard version may continue with LPDDR5x memory and UFS 4.1 storage.

Both processors have also been tipped to feature a 2+3+3 CPU configuration, although these specifications remain unconfirmed.

The Bigger Question: Why Launch Another Gen 5 Chip Now?

The timing is what makes this leak particularly intriguing.

With the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 generation reportedly approaching, Qualcomm could simply focus its attention on its next flagship platform. Instead, the alleged development of another Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 variant suggests that the company may see continued demand for the current generation.

A lower-priced variant could help Qualcomm extend the life of its existing flagship platform and give smartphone brands more flexibility when designing devices for different price segments.

For consumers, the biggest potential benefit could be simple: flagship performance may become less expensive.

For now, though, the SM8850-1-AB remains an unconfirmed leak. Qualcomm has not officially announced the processor, its specifications, supported devices or launch timeline. Until the company makes an official statement, the reported performance figures and pricing targets should be treated with caution.
