Apple Launches Apple Upgrade Leasing Program in US With Klarna for iPhones, Macs & iPads
Apple has launched its new Apple Upgrade leasing program across the US in partnership with Klarna, allowing customers to lease iPhones, Macs, iPads and Apple Watches with flexible upgrade options.

Apple has introduced a new nationwide device leasing program in the United States, making it easier for customers to use the latest iPhones, Macs, iPads, and Apple Watches without paying the full purchase price upfront.

Called Apple Upgrade, the service is being rolled out in partnership with Klarna, giving eligible customers a fresh way to stay on the latest hardware while spreading payments over time. The move comes as premium smartphones and laptops continue to become more expensive, offering consumers an alternative to traditional financing or outright purchases.

According to Apple, the program allows customers to lease select devices for periods ranging from 12 to 36 months. During the lease, users can also benefit from trade-in incentives and cashback offers, depending on the device and eligibility.

How Apple Upgrade Works

Unlike buying a device through monthly installments, Apple Upgrade is a leasing program. This means customers do not automatically own the device during the lease period.

At the end of the agreed lease term, users can choose from three options:

  • Upgrade to a newer Apple device by starting a fresh lease.
  • Purchase the leased device by making the final buyout payment.
  • Return the device without buying it.

This approach gives users greater flexibility, especially those who prefer using the latest technology without committing to long-term ownership.

Why Apple Is Launching It Now

The timing of the launch is noteworthy. Over the past few years, flagship smartphones, tablets, and computers have steadily become more expensive, prompting many consumers to hold onto their devices for longer.

By introducing a leasing model, Apple is aiming to reduce the financial burden of upgrading while encouraging customers to replace their devices more frequently. Shorter upgrade cycles can also help the company generate more predictable recurring revenue from its hardware business.

Industry analysts have long suggested that subscription-style ownership models could become increasingly important as smartphone innovation matures and consumers delay upgrades.

Benefits for Customers

The new program is designed for users who regularly upgrade to the newest Apple products.

Some of the key advantages include:

  • Lower monthly payments compared to paying the full retail price upfront.
  • Flexible lease periods from 12 to 36 months.
  • Trade-in opportunities that can reduce upgrade costs.
  • Cashback offers for eligible customers.
  • Multiple end-of-lease choices instead of a mandatory purchase.

However, customers should carefully review the lease terms, as ownership only transfers if they choose to complete the final purchase payment.

A Bigger Push Toward Flexible Device Ownership

The launch of Apple Upgrade reflects a broader shift in the consumer electronics industry, where manufacturers are increasingly offering subscription-like payment options rather than relying solely on traditional sales.

With competition intensifying and premium devices becoming more expensive every year, flexible financing and leasing options are expected to play a bigger role in attracting customers who want access to the latest technology without making a large one-time investment.

Whether the program eventually expands beyond the United States remains to be seen, but its rollout marks another significant step in Apple’s evolving retail strategy.
