Porsche’s iconic 911 enters GT4 racing for the first time… and it could change the game forever
After years of relying on the Cayman platform, Porsche has finally introduced the 911 GT4 R—a purpose-built customer race car set to make its debut in the 2027 season.
In a move that has caught the attention of motorsport enthusiasts worldwide, Porsche has officially unveiled the 911 GT4 R, marking the first time the legendary Porsche 911 will have a dedicated place on the GT4 racing grid.
For decades, Porsche’s presence in GT4 competition was represented by the Cayman-based GT4 race car. But now, with the arrival of the all-new 911 GT4 R, the German carmaker is preparing for a major shift in its customer racing strategy.
The purpose-built race car is scheduled to make its competitive debut in the 2027 racing season, and it is expected to become Porsche’s new weapon in one of motorsport’s fastest-growing categories.
A historic shift for Porsche motorsport
The GT4 racing category has grown rapidly over the years, establishing itself as a crucial bridge between amateur-level racing and the elite GT3 championships. It offers drivers and teams a platform to sharpen their skills before stepping into higher-performance categories.
With the 911 GT4 R, Porsche is aiming to attract not only experienced racing teams but also aspiring drivers looking to climb the motorsport ladder.
And for the brand, bringing the iconic 911 badge into GT4 is a major milestone.
Naturally aspirated power with serious performance
Under the skin, the Porsche 911 GT4 R packs a 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-six engine, producing up to 513 bhp and 470 Nm of torque.
However, like all GT4 race cars, the final power figures will vary depending on Balance of Performance (BoP) regulations used across different racing championships.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed sequential racing gearbox equipped with paddle shifters, delivering quick and precise gear changes designed for track competition.
Lighter, wider, sharper
Porsche has focused heavily on reducing weight and improving chassis dynamics. The 911 GT4 R features a wider stance, race-tuned suspension, adjustable dampers, and multiple spring configurations allowing teams to fine-tune the car based on circuit demands.

To save weight, Porsche has used natural fibre-reinforced composite materials across key exterior panels including the doors, engine cover, and aerodynamic parts.
The cockpit also benefits from lightweight construction, reinforcing its pure racing focus.
Aerodynamics built for flexibility
Aerodynamics have been given special attention, with one of the standout features being the manually adjustable rear wing. Teams can tweak wing settings depending on the track layout, helping optimise downforce and cornering performance.
This flexibility could give teams a valuable competitive edge in varying race conditions.
A race-ready digital cockpit
Inside, the 911 GT4 R is packed with racing-focused technology. The cabin features a 10.3-inch colour display for real-time vehicle data, an integrated GPS system, and an onboard data logger to help teams analyse performance and improve lap times.
The car can also be fitted with additional ballast to meet the weight regulations of different GT4 championships.
