A familiar controversy has once again surrounded Mexican football after fans were heard chanting a highly controversial homophobic slur during a recent World Cup group-stage match at the iconic Estadio Azteca.
The incident reportedly took place toward the end of the first half during Mexico’s match against the Czech Republic, when goalkeeper Matej Kovar prepared for a routine goal kick. The chant—long associated with Mexican football culture despite repeated bans—was clearly audible inside the stadium, immediately drawing concern from officials and global audiences.

This is not the first time such behaviour has triggered backlash. The same chant has previously led to heavy fines running into hundreds of thousands of dollars imposed by FIFA. Over the years, it has appeared in multiple global tournaments, including the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, 2018 World Cup in Russia, and again during Qatar 2022, despite continuous awareness campaigns and disciplinary actions.
The slur, which literally translates to a derogatory term in Spanish, has traditionally been used by some fans to distract or intimidate goalkeepers during goal kicks. However, football authorities have repeatedly classified it as discriminatory and unacceptable within stadium environments.
Mexico had already secured qualification to the knockout stage as Group A winners before this fixture, yet the incident has now shifted attention away from on-field performance to off-field controversy once again.
The Mexican Football Federation has spent years trying to eliminate the chant through education programs, stadium warnings, and collaboration with FIFA, but its persistence continues to pose a serious challenge.
With FIFA already maintaining strict anti-discrimination protocols, football experts believe this latest incident could once again put Mexican football under scrutiny and potentially lead to fresh sanctions.
