‘Why do we keep postponing films?’ Nagarjuna questions Tollywood’s release delays, cites Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey as an example

Veteran Tollywood actor Nagarjuna has openly spoken about the growing trend of last-minute film release postponements in the Telugu film industry. Addressing the audience during the success meet of Lenin, the actor called on filmmakers, directors and technicians to complete post-production work earlier so that announced release dates do not have to be changed repeatedly.

His remarks come at a time when several high-profile Telugu films have witnessed unexpected delays, leaving fans and exhibitors frustrated.

‘Why aren’t we able to stick to release dates?’

During his speech, Nagarjuna appealed to the industry’s creative teams to deliver completed films to the post-production department at least two weeks before release.

He admitted that he, too, had been part of the problem.“This is not about anyone else; it’s about me too. We also worked on Lenin till the very last minute,” he said.

The actor then referred to Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey, noting how its release date was announced nearly a year in advance.“The Odyssey announced its release date a year ahead. Why aren’t we able to do that? And when we do, why do we have to postpone it?” Nagarjuna asked.

His comments reflected a broader concern about planning and production schedules in the Telugu film industry.

Nagarjuna recalls a time when films were ready weeks before release

Looking back at his earlier career, Nagarjuna said the filmmaking process used to be much more organised.

He recalled that classics like Ninne Pelladata and Annamayya were fully completed well before their theatrical release.

According to the actor, the final release print of those films would often be ready nearly a month in advance, allowing enough time for quality checks and smooth distribution.

He stressed that returning to such disciplined production timelines would benefit not just filmmakers but the entire cinema ecosystem.“For the good of cinema and the health of cinema, I think we must do this,” he said.

Several Tollywood films have faced release postponements

In recent years, a number of Telugu films have announced release dates only to postpone them shortly before hitting theatres.

Projects including The Raja Saab, Devara, Peddi, and even Lenin experienced schedule changes, with post-production delays often cited as the primary reason.

The repeated postponements have impacted promotional campaigns, theatre planning and audience expectations.

Akhil Akkineni celebrates success with Lenin

On the professional front, Akhil Akkineni has made a successful comeback after a three-year break with Lenin.

Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, the film delivered the biggest opening of Akhil’s career, marking an important milestone for the actor.

Earlier, Nagarjuna had emotionally revealed that he prayed at Tirumala for his son’s success before the film’s release.

Sharing the heartfelt moment, he said that although he rarely asks for anything during his temple visits, this time he prayed for Akhil to receive a blockbuster. He later learned that actress Bhagyashri Borse had made a similar prayer.

Directed by Murali Kishor Abburu, Lenin is jointly produced by Nagarjuna Akkineni and Suryadevara Naga Vamsi under Manam Enterprises LLP and Sithara Entertainments, with Annapurna Studios presenting the film. The cast also includes Ramki, Sivaji, Sunil, Brahmaji, and Easwari Rao.
