Sanju Samson says he no longer wants to chase expectations or selection debates, choosing instead to enjoy cricket on his own terms after years of ups and downs.
India wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has made a bold statement about his approach to international cricket, revealing that he has stepped away from what he describes as the sport’s constant “rat race.” The 31-year-old says his focus is no longer on outside opinions or long-term planning but on enjoying the game and staying true to himself.
Speaking on JioStar’s show Believe, Samson reflected on his cricketing journey and explained why he has chosen a different mindset at this stage of his career.
“I realised that there is a constant rat race in our country, and I decided before the 2026 T20 World Cup that I would not be part of it. I just want to enjoy the game,” Samson said.
Choosing Freedom Over Pressure
Samson emphasized that he no longer wants external voices to dictate how he should play or shape his career. Instead, he believes trusting his instincts is the best way forward.

“No one will tell me how to bat or what to do. Sanju will decide for Sanju,” he said, adding that while he remains committed to being a supportive teammate, he intends to play the game in a way that feels right to him.
The experienced batter also made it clear that his decision is not about distancing himself from the team but about embracing a healthier perspective toward cricket and competition.
A Journey Filled With Highs and Lows
Earlier this year, Samson appeared to have secured his place in India’s T20I setup after scoring three consecutive half-centuries, playing a key role in India’s successful Men’s T20 World Cup campaign on home soil.
However, his place in the squad came under scrutiny after a dip in form during the matches against Ireland and England, leading to his omission from India’s subsequent tour of Zimbabwe.
Despite the setback, Samson says he has learned not to let selection decisions define his happiness or career.

The Kerala-born cricketer admitted that he never expected to feature in the 2026 T20 World Cup after previously finding himself outside India’s core plans. As a result, he believes there is little value in looking too far ahead.
“If I’m there, if the team needs me, and if I’m playing well, things will fall into place. If not, I am deeply grateful. No one can take this achievement away from me,” Samson remarked.
His comments reflect a mature outlook built on gratitude rather than uncertainty, highlighting his desire to focus on performance instead of speculation.
