Madhuri Dixit reflects on facing body-shaming and harsh judgments during the early years of her Bollywood career.

Veteran Bollywood star Madhuri Dixit has opened up about facing body-shaming and harsh judgments during the early phase of her acting career, revealing how women in the entertainment industry are constantly criticised for their appearance.

The actress, who is currently receiving praise for her OTT release ‘Maa Behen’, reflected on her personal experiences while discussing the film’s themes of societal judgment and casual slut-shaming faced by women.

In a recent interview, Madhuri shared that when she entered the film industry in the 1980s, people often criticised her for being “too skinny.”

Recalling those early days, the actress said, “You’re a public figure. You’re putting yourself out there. There will, of course, be comments coming your way. When I had started out, they thought I was too skinny. They would say, ‘Isko kuch khilaao.’ People are very quick to judge.”

The actress also pointed out how women are constantly scrutinised regardless of how they look.

“They judge you for putting on weight, they judge you if you lose weight,” Madhuri remarked, adding that comments about physical appearance are often among the first things people say in social interactions.

Speaking about Indian society’s obsession with appearance, she noted that such remarks are deeply normalised in everyday conversations.

According to Madhuri, one major difference between the past and present is the rise of social media, which has amplified criticism and made it far more direct and personal for celebrities.

The actress explained that while judgments existed earlier too, actors were somewhat shielded from them because there was no digital platform constantly broadcasting opinions.

“Today, because of social media and the anonymity that comes with it, people can say anything,” she said.

Despite the negativity, Madhuri believes the key is self-love and staying focused on one’s passion instead of paying attention to unnecessary criticism.

She encouraged people to concentrate on what makes them happy and not let online comments define their self-worth.

Meanwhile, Madhuri recently found herself linked once again to an old rumour involving singer Suresh Wadkar. Reports had long claimed that Wadkar rejected a marriage proposal from Madhuri’s family because he thought she was “too thin.”

However, the singer recently dismissed the speculation, clarifying that no such proposal ever reached him.

On the professional front, ‘Maa Behen’ has earned positive reviews from audiences and critics alike. The film showcases Madhuri in a refreshing comic role, with many praising her impeccable comic timing and emotionally layered performance.

Her portrayal of Rekha in the film has especially resonated with viewers, proving once again why Madhuri Dixit continues to remain one of the most admired and versatile performers in Indian cinema.
