The foldable smartphone race is heating up again, and this time Samsung Electronics appears ready to shake the market with its next big reveal — the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.

According to multiple South Korean industry reports and supply-chain leaks, Samsung is preparing to host its next Galaxy Unpacked event around 22 July, with speculation pointing to London as the possible venue — a first if confirmed. India, meanwhile, is expected to receive the devices almost immediately after the global launch, continuing its growing importance in Samsung’s premium strategy.

If leaks are accurate, this year’s foldable lineup may not just be an upgrade — it could be a complete reset.

1. A NEW NAME GAME: “ULTRA” TAKES OVER

One of the biggest surprises this year could be Samsung’s reshuffled naming strategy.

The traditional successor to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is reportedly being rebranded as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, while a second variant — rumoured to be called the Fold 8 Wide — may sit alongside it as a lighter, broader alternative.

This move would mirror Samsung’s Galaxy S Ultra positioning strategy, placing the Ultra as the true flagship tier while expanding the lineup below it. Interestingly, a Bluetooth certification listing has already hinted at multiple Fold 8 Ultra variants, adding fuel to the speculation.

If true, Samsung is clearly preparing to segment its foldables more aggressively than ever before.

2. PRICE HIKE LOOMS OVER PREMIUM SEGMENT

For Indian buyers, the biggest concern may not be features — but pricing.

Early leaks suggest the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra could start globally at around $2,099, slightly higher than the Fold 7’s launch price. Higher storage variants, especially the 1TB model, may cross the $2,600 mark.

In India, that could translate to a starting price hovering near or above ₹1.75 lakh, with top-end variants potentially breaching ₹2.20 lakh.

The increase is reportedly driven by rising component costs, particularly memory and storage, as manufacturers push for higher performance and AI capabilities.

3. CAMERA BOOST: ULTRAWIDE GETS A BIG JUMP

Photography enthusiasts may finally see a meaningful upgrade this time.

While the main 200MP sensor and telephoto setup are expected to remain unchanged, the ultrawide camera could jump from 12MP to 50MP, making it the biggest imaging upgrade of the new Fold generation.

The cover display selfie camera may also see a design refinement, with a smaller punch-hole cutout — though without major changes in resolution.

If implemented well, this could finally improve the Fold’s long-standing weakness in wide-angle photography.

4. DESIGN EVOLUTION: LESS CREASE, BIGGER BATTERY

Display improvements are also expected to play a key role this year.

Samsung is reportedly using a new laser-drilling display technique to reduce the visibility of the fold crease — one of the most criticised aspects of foldable phones since their inception.

Alongside this, the battery is tipped to grow to 5,000mAh, up from the previous 4,400mAh unit seen in earlier models like the Fold 7. Charging speed may also receive a significant boost, potentially jumping from 25W to 45W fast charging.

While the crease may not disappear entirely, insiders suggest it could become far less noticeable in daily use.

5. SOFTWARE GETS AN AI MAKEOVER WITH ONE UI 9

On the software front, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is expected to launch with One UI 9, based on Android 17.

Samsung is likely to deepen its AI integration through Samsung One UI, with tighter connectivity to Google Gemini for multi-step tasks, smarter widgets, and improved productivity tools.

Other expected additions include:

  • A redesigned Samsung Internet browser
  • “Ask AI” feature for in-browser assistance
  • Enhanced Flex Mode multitasking
  • Continued support for Samsung DeX desktop experience

The focus is clear: turning the Fold into a true AI-powered productivity device rather than just a luxury smartphone.

THE BIG QUESTION: IS SAMSUNG READY FOR THE NEXT FOLDABLE WAR?

While none of these details are officially confirmed, the consistency of leaks suggests the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is already largely finalised.

What remains uncertain is how buyers will respond to the likely price increase — especially as competition heats up and rumours of rival foldables from other tech giants continue to circulate.

For now, all eyes are on Samsung’s upcoming Unpacked event. If even half these rumours turn out to be true, the Fold 8 Ultra may not just be an upgrade — it could be a statement.
