27 सितंबर 2025 — आज दुनिया की सबसे बड़ी टेक कंपनियों में शुमार गूगल अपना 27वां जन्मदिन मना रहा है। इंटरनेट का इस्तेमाल करने वाला शायद ही कोई इंसान होगा जिसने गूगल को कभी न खोला हो। लेकिन क्या आपने कभी सोचा है कि आखिर “Google” शब्द का मतलब क्या है और इसका नाम कैसे पड़ा? इसकी कहानी उतनी ही दिलचस्प है जितनी गूगल की कामयाबी।
Google नाम की असली कहानी
गूगल का नाम वास्तव में “Googol” शब्द से प्रेरित है। यह एक गणितीय शब्द है जिसका मतलब है – 1 के बाद 100 जीरो, यानी 1010010^{100}10100। इस शब्द को गणितज्ञ एडवर्ड कस्नर के भांजे मिल्टन सिरोट्टा ने गढ़ा था।
इस नाम से गूगल के संस्थापक लैरी पेज और सर्गेई ब्रिन यह दिखाना चाहते थे कि उनका सर्च इंजन इंटरनेट पर उपलब्ध असीमित जानकारी को दुनिया के सामने ला सकेगा।
जब गूगल का नाम होना था Googol
साल 1997 में गूगल की शुरुआत BackRub नाम से हुई थी। लेकिन बाद में टीम ने तय किया कि इसका नाम कुछ ऐसा होना चाहिए जो विशाल जानकारी का प्रतीक बने। इसी दौरान “Googolplex” और फिर “Googol” नाम सामने आया।
स्टैनफोर्ड यूनिवर्सिटी के ही एक छात्र शॉन एंडरसन ने जब यह डोमेन नाम रजिस्टर करने की कोशिश की तो गलती से उसने “Googol” की जगह “Google” लिख दिया। यह नाम उपलब्ध था और लैरी पेज को यह इतना पसंद आया कि तुरंत google.com रजिस्टर कर लिया गया।
गैराज से लेकर वर्ल्ड लीडर बनने तक
गूगल की शुरुआत साल 1998 में कैलिफोर्निया के Menlo Park में एक छोटे से गैराज से हुई थी। उसी साल 4 सितंबर को कंपनी का आधिकारिक रूप से रजिस्ट्रेशन हुआ।
लेकिन गूगल अपनी सालगिरह 27 सितंबर को मनाता है क्योंकि इस दिन कंपनी ने एक बड़ा इंटरनल माइलस्टोन हासिल किया था।
आज गूगल केवल एक सर्च इंजन नहीं बल्कि दुनिया की सबसे बड़ी टेक कंपनियों में से एक है। साल 2015 में इसे Alphabet Inc. की सहायक कंपनी बना दिया गया।
गूगल का वर्तमान
आज गूगल और अल्फाबेट के सीईओ सुंदर पिचाई हैं। हालांकि संस्थापक लैरी पेज और सर्गेई ब्रिन अब भी कंपनी के बोर्ड का हिस्सा हैं और उनके पास वोटिंग पावर है।
दुनिया भर के अरबों लोग रोज़मर्रा के कामों के लिए गूगल का इस्तेमाल करते हैं — चाहे जानकारी खोजनी हो, ईमेल भेजना हो, वीडियो देखना हो या लोकेशन ढूंढना। सच कहा जाए तो गूगल ने इंटरनेट को आसान बनाकर पूरी दुनिया की दिशा ही बदल दी।

आज जब गूगल 27 साल का हो गया है, तो यह याद दिलाता है कि कभी-कभी एक छोटी-सी गलती भी दुनिया को बदल सकती है। “Googol” की जगह “Google” लिखे गए नाम ने एक नए युग की शुरुआत की और यह नाम आज हर इंसान की ज़िंदगी का हिस्सा बन चुका है।
