New Delhi: Massive Student Protest Adds Fresh Security Challenge Before Independence Day

With Independence Day preparations entering their final phase, authorities in New Delhi are facing an increasingly complex security situation as the ongoing student protest at Jantar Mantar continues to grow in size. According to intelligence inputs, the demonstration, led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), has attracted more than 15,000 protesters, with participants reportedly arriving from different parts of the country.

The swelling crowd has prompted central security agencies to strengthen arrangements across the capital, where security is already heightened every year due to the Prime Minister’s address, VIP movements, and national celebrations on August 15.

Additional Paramilitary Forces Deployed Across Delhi

To reinforce law and order, the Union Home Ministry has deployed 20 additional companies of paramilitary forces to support the Delhi Police. This comes after an earlier deployment of 20 companies of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) from West Bengal.

Officials familiar with the security arrangements indicated that the total strength of paramilitary personnel stationed in Delhi is expected to exceed 50 companies in the coming days, reflecting the seriousness with which authorities are approaching the evolving situation.

Security agencies are focused on maintaining peace while ensuring that preparations for Independence Day remain unaffected.

Authorities Intensify Security Around Jantar Mantar

Security has been significantly tightened in and around Jantar Mantar, one of Delhi’s designated protest sites. Police personnel have increased barricading, frisking operations, surveillance, and vehicle checks in the surrounding areas.

Traffic diversions have also been implemented at several key routes near the protest venue to manage congestion and facilitate security movement. Additional police pickets have been deployed across Lutyens’ Delhi, where many government buildings and official residences are located.

Officials say these measures are precautionary and part of broader efforts to safeguard the national capital during one of the country’s most significant annual events.

Facial Recognition Cameras Installed for Enhanced Monitoring

As part of the upgraded security framework, Facial Recognition System (FRS) cameras have been installed at multiple locations across the New Delhi district.

According to police sources, the technology is intended to identify wanted criminals, anti-social elements, and individuals who may attempt to exploit the large gathering for unlawful activities.

Authorities clarified that the deployment of these cameras is not aimed at monitoring peaceful protesters, but forms part of standard security procedures routinely adopted during major national events, including Independence Day, Republic Day, and large public gatherings.

Focus on Peaceful Law and Order Ahead of August 15

With Independence Day approaching, security agencies remain focused on balancing the right to peaceful protest with the need to ensure public safety and smooth conduct of national celebrations.

Officials continue to monitor the evolving situation closely as the protest remains active, while reinforcing security infrastructure across the city to prevent any disruption during the high-profile event.

As Delhi prepares to host one of the country’s most important national occasions, authorities are expected to maintain heightened vigilance until the conclusion of the Independence Day celebrations.
