Jana Nayagan Box Office Day 5: CM Vijay’s Final Film Crashes 68% on Monday Despite ₹134 Crore Total… Can It Still Bounce Back?

The box office journey of Jana Nayagan, the much-awaited farewell film of Vijay, has entered a crucial phase. While the political action drama managed to register a solid opening and showed encouraging weekend growth, its first Monday performance has raised concerns about its long-term theatrical run.

Released on July 23, the film marked Vijay’s final appearance on the big screen before shifting his complete focus to politics after becoming the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The massive anticipation surrounding the film helped it open strongly, but mixed reactions from audiences and critics appear to have slowed its momentum.

Jana Nayagan records a steep Monday decline

After collecting an impressive ₹32 crore on Sunday, Jana Nayagan witnessed a sharp fall on Monday, earning an estimated ₹10.15 crore across all languages—a decline of nearly 68%.

The Tamil version continued to dominate the collections with approximately ₹8.40 crore, while the Hindi dubbed version contributed around ₹1.20 crore and the Telugu version added nearly ₹55 lakh.

Despite the significant drop, the film’s overall domestic net collection now stands at approximately ₹134 crore, placing it close to the ₹150 crore milestone. However, industry observers believe the weekdays ahead will determine whether the film can maintain a healthy theatrical run or witness further declines.

Strong opening, but momentum slows

The film opened with around ₹42 crore on its first day before seeing collections fall to nearly ₹21 crore on the second day. Weekend footfalls helped revive business, with Saturday bringing in ₹28.90 crore and Sunday reaching ₹32 crore.

Although the weekend recovery offered hope, Monday’s performance indicates that word-of-mouth may not be strong enough to sustain the film at its initial pace.

A landmark film in Vijay’s career

Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan holds special significance as it is the final film of Vijay before his transition into full-time politics. The movie’s release had originally been planned for January but was postponed due to delays in receiving certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

During the postponement, Vijay’s political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), secured victory in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, making the film’s eventual release even more symbolic for fans.

Star-studded cast drives the action

Apart from Vijay, the film features Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, and Narain in key roles.

The story follows Thalapathy Vetri Kondan, who dedicates himself to raising Viji into a fearless and independent woman determined to serve in the army. His mission becomes increasingly difficult when he is forced to confront his longtime adversary, John Himmler, leading to an intense battle filled with action and emotional conflicts.

Deleted scenes could return to theatres

Even before its release, Jana Nayagan generated headlines after reports of online leaks surfaced. More recently, the makers organised a success meet in Chennai, where director H. Vinoth revealed that six scenes—including comedy, action and emotional sequences—were removed from the theatrical cut.

The filmmaker also hinted that discussions are underway with the producers to restore these deleted scenes in cinemas, a move that could potentially attract audiences back to theatres in the coming days.

Crossing the ₹150 crore mark appears achievable for Jana Nayagan, but maintaining consistent collections during the weekdays will be the real challenge. With fan interest still strong and the possibility of additional scenes being added to the film, the coming week could prove decisive for the box office fate of Vijay’s final cinematic outing.
